The ramifications of COVID-19 restrictions might accelerate the already rising proportion of children with overweight or obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objectives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To assess the association between COVID-19 restrictions and changes in body mass index (BMI) and the proportion of children with overweight or obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Methods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cohort study with baseline measurements in September 2019 (prior to COVID-19 restrictions) and follow-up in June 2020, September 2020, and March 2021 at 12 primary schools in Austria. The height and weight of 738 children aged 7 to 10\u2009years were measured and age- and sex-specific national and international standardized values were calculated. Changes over time were analysed by analysis of variance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mean BMIIOTF<\/sub> standard deviation scores (SDS) increased by 0.24 (95% CI, 0.21\u20130.28) between September 2019 and March 2021. The proportion of children with overweight or obesity increased from 20.7% to 26.2% during this period (p<\/em>\u2009<\u20090.001) using national reference values\u2014EQUI BMIAUT<\/sub>\u2014comparable results were observed. Simultaneously, the heightAUT<\/sub> SDS increased by 0.06 (95% CI, 0.05\u20130.08) with a larger increase in girls (+0.11; p<\/em>\u2009<\u20090.001) than in boys (+0.03; p<\/em> = 0.19).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

COVID-19 restrictions were associated with accelerated increases in mean BMI and the proportion of children with overweight or obesity. The increase in height SDS in girls calls for further investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kohortenstudie mit Baseline-Messungen im September 2019 (vor COVID-19-Einschr\u00e4nkungen) und Follow-up im Juni 2020, September 2020 und M\u00e4rz 2021 an 12 Volksschulen in \u00d6sterreich. Bei 738 Kindern im Alter von 7 bis 10 Jahren wurden Gr\u00f6\u00dfe und Gewicht gemessen und alters- und geschlechtsspezifische nationale und internationale Normwerte berechnet. \u00c4nderungen \u00fcber die Zeit wurden durch Varianzanalyse analysiert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ergebnisse<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die mittleren BMI- IOTF- Standardabweichungswerte (SDS) stiegen zwischen September 2019 und M\u00e4rz 2021 um 0,24 (95 %-KI, 0,21\u20130,28). Der Anteil der Kinder mit \u00dcbergewicht oder Adipositas stieg in diesem Zeitraum von 20,7 % auf 26,2 % (p < \u20090,001 ) unter Verwendung nationaler Referenzwerte \u2013 EQUI BMI AUT \u2013 wurden vergleichbare Ergebnisse beobachtet. Gleichzeitig stieg der K\u00f6rpergr\u00f6\u00dfen -AUT- SDS um 0,06 (95 % KI, 0,05\u20130,08) mit einem gr\u00f6\u00dferen Anstieg bei M\u00e4dchen (+0,11; p \u2009< 0,001) als bei Jungen (+0,03; p  = 0,19).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schlussfolgerungen<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COVID-19-Beschr\u00e4nkungen waren mit einem beschleunigten Anstieg des mittleren BMI und des Anteils von Kindern mit \u00dcbergewicht oder Adipositas verbunden. Die Zunahme der K\u00f6rpergr\u00f6\u00dfe SDS bei M\u00e4dchen erfordert weitere Untersuchungen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
