The quality and habits of mask wearing have, however, not been evaluated thus far, leaving uncertainty about the efficacy of this measure. It was the aim of this study to assess the accuracy of face mask wearing by children and adolescents in different school situations. In May and June 2022, students of two selected Austrian schools were asked to provide information about the different variations in wearing a face mask in different situations at school (in classrooms with or without the presence of a teacher, and in school buildings outside classrooms without the presence of a teacher). Strongly divergent results were identified for the amount of time in which face masks were worn correctly in the three different situations (p &lt; 0.001, eta = 0.29). In the presence of a teacher, masks were worn correctly 63.7% of the time, while this percentage decreased to 31.9% when no teacher was present (p &lt; 0.001). These results suggest the limited efficacy of mandatory face masks in schools. Should this measure become necessary again in the future due to the pandemic situation and highly pathogenic variants, special efforts are necessary in order to improve the quality of face mask wearing by school children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zusammenfassung:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neben anderen Minderungsma\u00dfnahmen wurden in Schulen weltweit Gesichtsmasken als Voraussetzung f\u00fcr den Schulbesuch w\u00e4hrend der COVID-19-Pandemie verwendet.&nbsp;Qualit\u00e4t und Gewohnheiten des Maskentragens wurden bisher jedoch nicht evaluiert, sodass Unsicherheit \u00fcber die Wirksamkeit dieser Ma\u00dfnahme besteht.&nbsp;Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Genauigkeit des Tragens von Gesichtsmasken bei Kindern und Jugendlichen in verschiedenen Schulsituationen zu beurteilen.&nbsp;Im Mai und Juni 2022 wurden Sch\u00fclerinnen und Sch\u00fcler zweier ausgew\u00e4hlter \u00f6sterreichischer Schulen gebeten, Informationen zu den unterschiedlichen Varianten des Tragens einer Mund-Nasen-Bedeckung in unterschiedlichen Situationen in der Schule (in Klassenzimmern mit oder ohne Anwesenheit eines Lehrers und in Schulgeb\u00e4uden au\u00dferhalb von Klassenzimmern ohne) zu geben die Anwesenheit eines Lehrers).p&nbsp;&lt; 0,001, eta = 0,29).&nbsp;In Anwesenheit eines Lehrers wurden Masken in 63,7 % der F\u00e4lle korrekt getragen, w\u00e4hrend dieser Prozentsatz auf 31,9 % sank, wenn kein Lehrer anwesend war (&nbsp;p&nbsp;&lt; 0,001).&nbsp;Diese Ergebnisse deuten auf die begrenzte Wirksamkeit obligatorischer Gesichtsmasken in Schulen hin.&nbsp;Sollte diese Ma\u00dfnahme aufgrund der Pandemiesituation und hochpathogener Varianten in Zukunft erneut erforderlich werden, sind besondere Anstrengungen erforderlich, um die Qualit\u00e4t des Tragens von Gesichtsmasken bei Schulkindern zu verbessern.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Published \/ Publiziert: 28.10.2022 Wie Sch\u00fcler der Mittel- und Oberstufe ihre Gesichtsmasken in Klassenr\u00e4umen und Schulgeb\u00e4uden tragen LINK to the open access publication \/ LINK zur vollst\u00e4ndigen Publikation: https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/healthcare10091641 Abstract: In addition to other mitigation measures, face masks have been used in schools worldwide as a precondition for allowing school attendance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
