Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The COVID-19-related closing of schools and sport facilities resulted in major changes to daily routines worldwide. It was the aim of this study to investigate the impact of COVID-19-related mitigation measures on the health and fitness status of primary school children in Austria. Seven hundred and eight primary school children (7\u201310 years old) participated in the longitudinal study. Data on height, weight, waist circumference, and fitness were collected before (September 2019) and during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic (June 20, September 20, March 21, June 21). A significant increase in EQUI BMIAUT (\u03b7p<\/sub>2<\/sup> = 0.087) and significant changes (\u03b7p<\/sub>2<\/sup> = 0.355) in waist circumference were found. Cardiorespiratory endurance (\u03b7p<\/sub>2<\/sup> = 0.440) and action speed (\u03b7p<\/sub>2<\/sup> = 0.221) decreased dramatically following lockdowns\/school closures. In contrast, muscle strength showed no significant changes. The COVID-19-related mitigation measures intended to contain a communicable disease resulted in an acceleration of the pre-existing pandemic of overweight and obesity. The adverse combination of increasing BMI and the loss of physical fitness is likely to result in long-term negative effects on the health status of growing and developing individuals. Health professionals should therefore not only support further longitudinal observations of this \u201cnon-communicable disease\u201d but also support intervention programs to reverse this worrying side-effect of COVID-19-associated containment policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zusammenfassung:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die COVID-19-bedingte Schlie\u00dfung von Schulen und Sportst\u00e4tten hat weltweit zu gro\u00dfen Ver\u00e4nderungen im Alltag gef\u00fchrt. Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Auswirkungen von COVID-19-bezogenen Minderungsma\u00dfnahmen auf den Gesundheits- und Fitnesszustand von Grundschulkindern in \u00d6sterreich zu untersuchen. An der L\u00e4ngsschnittstudie nahmen 708 Grundschulkinder (7\u201310 Jahre alt) teil. Daten zu Gr\u00f6\u00dfe, Gewicht, Taillenumfang und Fitness wurden vor (September 2019) und im Verlauf der COVID-19-Pandemie (20. Juni, 20. September, 21. M\u00e4rz, 21. Juni) erhoben. Es wurden ein signifikanter Anstieg des EQUI BMI AUT (\u03b7p<\/sub>2 <\/sup>= 0,087) und signifikante Ver\u00e4nderungen (\u03b7p<\/sub>2 <\/sup>= 0,355) des Taillenumfangs festgestellt. Kardiorespiratorische Ausdauer (\u03b7p<\/sub>2<\/sup> = 0,440) und die Handlungsgeschwindigkeit (\u03b7p<\/sub>2 <\/sup>= 0,221) nahmen nach Lockdowns\/Schulschlie\u00dfungen dramatisch ab. Im Gegensatz dazu zeigte die Muskelkraft keine signifikanten Ver\u00e4nderungen. Die Ma\u00dfnahmen zur Eind\u00e4mmung von COVID-19 zur Eind\u00e4mmung einer \u00fcbertragbaren Krankheit f\u00fchrten zu einer Beschleunigung der bereits bestehenden Pandemie von \u00dcbergewicht und Adipositas. Die ung\u00fcnstige Kombination von steigendem BMI und dem Verlust der k\u00f6rperlichen Fitness f\u00fchrt wahrscheinlich zu langfristigen negativen Auswirkungen auf den Gesundheitszustand von wachsenden und sich entwickelnden Personen. Angeh\u00f6rige der Gesundheitsberufe sollten daher nicht nur weitere L\u00e4ngsschnittbeobachtungen dieser \u201enicht \u00fcbertragbaren Krankheit\u201c unterst\u00fctzen, sondern auch Interventionsprogramme unterst\u00fctzen, um diese besorgniserregende Nebenwirkung der Ma\u00dfnahmen zur Eind\u00e4mmung von COVID-19 umzukehren.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
